This past weekend I took my first trip ever to Wisconsin. I have to say, I was unsure of what I’d find there but the state turned out to be remarkably beautiful and was an incredibly enjoyable experience. We traveled there for a beautiful wedding in Waupaca, and to get there we flew into Milwaukee and were able to spend a couple hours in the city. So we decided to do what we do best: drink, and eat.
Of course, whenever I travel anywhere I become obsessed with eating the iconic foods of that region. So my first thought was where I was going to get cheese. I was really excited for the cheese. Going through the airport I almost made my fiancé buy me a cheese hat, and then I remembered that I have nowhere to put a cheese hat in my apartment so I dropped the idea. Being that it was 8:30 AM when we landed in Milwaukee my fiancé and I opted to go out to brunch because we were craving some Bloody Marys and of course, cheese.
I did my usual Foursquare/Yelp search to try and determine where we should go to get the best Milwaukee experience possible in just a few short hours. I had a few places lined up, but when we got in the rental car shuttle we were chatting with the driver and he recommended Sobelman’s for their Bloody Marys. A quick check on Foursquare confirmed this this was an awesome place, so we got our car and drove right on over. It was about 9:30 AM when we arrived, and we were worried that it wouldn’t be open (or worse, not serving alcohol!) but luck was in our favor and we were able to walk right on in and grab two seats at the bar! I don’t believe that they are usually open that early, but that day happened to be a Cubs game day so people were literally pouring in, decked out in sports gear.
Immediately you can tell that Sobelman’s is a fun place, probably good for fueling up before tailgates or baseball games. It was obvious that they’re famous for their Bloody Marys, and for good reason! They have an entire station behind the bar manned by 4-5 employees that are just cranking them out. They had a dozen different options with toppings ranging from bacon cheese balls, sliders, cheese wedges, and GET THIS, a whole fried chicken stuck on top! That’s right, for $60 you could get a bloody mary that serves four with an entire chicken right there. I was literally in heaven. Since I had a dress to fit into I turned down the whole fried chicken, but I did get the “Cheesehead” Bloody Mary with bacon cheese “cracks”. Other toppings on my bloody included a shrimp, asparagus, Brussels sprout, mushroom, olives, pickles, tomato, and celery. And to top it all off they serve each Bloody with a side of beer, just for washing it all down. Matt got a Baconado Bloody with jalapeno bacon wrapped cheese balls stuffed on a skewer right on top. By the time we finished our Bloody Mary toppings we were practically full!
Nevertheless, we had some food to order. If you go to Sobelman’s you have to get one of the burgers. There’s really no excuse for you not to; if you’re in the Midwest be prepared to eat more meat, cheese, and bread than you ever thought possible. I opted for the classic Sobelman burger with American, Swiss, and cheddar cheese, bacon, fried onions, and jalapenos, while Matt got the Wisco burger which is a beef and a brat sausage patty topped with heaping amounts of cheese and sauerkraut. Man oh man were these burgers good. Something about them was just so much better than any burger I had had in a long time. I don’t know if it was because of the cheese, but it was just so buttery and creamy and the flavors literally oozed into my mouth. They definitely must have slathered butter on the buns, which I’m not complaining about. All the toppings were perfect pairings with the salty, juicy beef burger, and although the burger was incredibly flavorful it wasn’t a mess to eat. I feel like some burgers are so juicy that the bun is immediately soaked and just crumbles everywhere, ruining the experience. Not this one though! I got through about ¾ of the burger before I called it quits, and Matt got through his whole thing.
For the entire rest of the day we were satisfied; Matt didn’t even try to pilfer the entire hors d’ouvres table at the wedding like he usually does! Before the wedding though we were able to go to Lakefront Brewery to have a beer while sitting outside by the river, which was absolutely amazing. Beer, bloodies, and burgers, what else could I want from my Wisconsin vacation?
I urge all of you to go to Milwaukee and spend some time there. I know I’m dying to go back and be able to really experience it. Make sure to try lots of food, lots of beer, and let me know how it goes. Wisconsin, I’ll be back.
